A collection of miniature oval-shaped portraits that hung on the white walls inside the Maison de l’UNESCO, the location for Loewe's fall 2019 show, served as an indication of what show-goers could expect from designer Jonathan Anderson. Featuring famous women and men like Mary Queen of Scots and King Charles I, the photos were a bit of a preview of the clothing we saw hit the runway: Blouses with voluminous sleeves, plus a flourish at the collar; coats with majorly wide or off-kilter lapels, dresses with feather finishes, and even a round of kooky hats. All looks were inspired by these portraits from the 16th and 17th century.
Known for his ability to mix crafty touches with precision tailoring, many of the pieces could have veered into costume-like territory but thanks to modern finishes like Chelsea boots and of course the introduction of new bag shapes, the collection felt wearable (especially the knits and trousers).
